6. Birth

Together, the two gods ruled over their world with an iron fist. Their subjects built great monuments in their honour, dedicating every aspect of their daily lives to their gods. At first, Vallahaatu was apprehensive about forcing such small beings to do his bidding, but with the tender guidance of his new companion Vaerhal’ia, he soon came to realize the truth. He had, of course, had a hand in the creation of these beings, so why shouldn’t he expect them to worship him? They would never have existed otherwise, they had every reason to be eternally grateful to him. And he loved every minute of it.

In time, the two gods grew closer, sharing much with one another. What began as cautious intrigue had blossomed into something much, much deeper. Vallahaatu came to realize that he was feeling things he had no true description for. When he was with her, a sense of peace and purpose enveloped him, which quickly turned sour when they had to be apart. He found that he could not bear to be apart from her for long. The Djinni people, for that is what they called themselves, referred to feelings such as this as love. Vallahaatu realized, he loved Vaerhal’ia. And he believed she felt the same, as she too seemed happier when he was near.

Their love for each other culminated into both of them desiring to attempt something that they witnessed the Djinni performing, often late at night. These rituals, typically between man and woman [although they had seen similar rituals between two men, as well as two women] lasted a varying amount of time, and on occasion, resulted in offspring several months later. Vallahaatu of course knew about this, but had never truly experienced it himself.

When the two gods joined bodies, it was as if everything suddenly made sense to Vallahaatu; he knew that he had truly found where he belonged.

As the two powerful beings engaged each other, they could not help but release bursts of energy as their ecstasy grew in intensity. Walls of the temple cracked, the ground shook, winds howled through the buildings below as thunder and lightning crackled across the sky. After what both gods wished could have been an eternity, they at last climaxed, their combined energies tearing the roof clear off the temple to crash dangerously onto the city below. But the two gods did not care. The two gods spend the next year simply enjoying each other, ignoring the cries for mercy from the helpless people below, and occasionally having to pause to recreate the temple structure.

When at last they decided that they must return to life as it was, they found their subjects to be even more compliant than they had already been. It would seem that the year of nonstop calamity had been taken as a sign that the two gods were angry with them, and they had increased their worship, and sacrifices, tenfold. This suited the gods just fine.

Some time later, while Vallahaatu was observing the progress of another city’s construction, he sensed something deeply wrong. Vaerhal’ia was in agony. Without hesitation he moved himself back to their home, where he found his Queen doubled over in pain.

“What is wrong my love? What foul sorcery ails you?” He demanded.

“There is…something…else…” Vaerhal’ia gasped.

Peering inside of her, Vallahaatu saw that she was correct, but that there was more than one new presence inside her. Without knowing what else to do, he guided his wife back to their bedchambers, where he made sure she was as comfortable as she could be.

For nearly a decade, she remained in this state. Without faltering, her diligent husband tended to her every whim. Until one day, as he was in another part of the temple since she commanded him to continue his duty, he heard his wife cry out. The sound echoed throughout the temple and out into the world, so that even the city-folk stopped in their tracks. Rushing to his wife’s chamber, the elder god gasped at what he saw.

There was his wife, sitting upright in bed. But in her arms lay two grey-skinned, beautiful infants. The one was a girl child with fiery red hair, her emerald eyes shining brightly like Vaerhal’ia’s, scanning everything in the room intently. The second was a boy, slightly smaller, with golden hair, the same shade as Vallahaatu’s.

Vaerhal’ia looked up from the two babes and smilled at him. “come my love. Meet your children.”

The two gods were amazed at this miracle. They did not know that their kind even could have offspring, and yet, here were two infants in their arms. Infants who possessed immense power, Vallahaatu could sense. The girl they named Va’aella, and the boy, Va’ash.
